CMG is a state-owned backbone enterprise under the direct supervision of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC). It is listed as one of the four major Chinese-funded enterprises in Hong Kong and has been awarded A grade by the SASAC for 13 consecutive years and the "Excellent Performance Enterprise" for four consecutive terms. As a representative in the digital transformation of large central enterprise, CMG pioneered in the adoption of eSurfing Cloud's active-active DR architecture and built an enterprise-level active-active DR IDC featuring efficiency, security, greenness and every conservation. The heterogeneous hybrid cloud networking between CMG private cloud and CT public cloud ensures stable running of production and operation activities within the group.
CMG is a pioneer in China's national industry and commerce, and plays an important role in China's modern economic history and social development history. Ever since its establishment in the Self-strengthening Movement in 1872, CMG has been at the forefront of China's industrial and commercial reforms. It established the first merchant fleet, the first bank and the first insurance company in China. In the Fortune 500 list released in 2021, China Merchants Group and its subsidiary China Merchants Bank were again included in the list, enabling the group to have two Fortune 500 companies.
Ever since establishment, CMG has been marching on the road of "seeking innovation" and "seeking change". Earlier, in order to implement unified management within the group, CMG migrated all physical systems to the private cloud, which brought nearly 7 times increase in resource utilization. However, this also incurred new problems. On the one hand, the core comprehensive management and control systems of CMG are centrally deployed in Shenzhen, which shoulder the heavy responsibility of connection and O&M of group data. Due to the lack of complete remote disaster preparedness and recovery measures, in the event of regional natural disasters and other unexpected incidents, immeasurable losses would be incurred. On the other hand, to achieve the sharing and interoperability of branches and platforms in multiple locations, CMG needs to build and expand IT resources in multiple regions. But whether to build these resources by itself or migrate them to cloud is a difficult choice faced by the group.
If CMG chooses to build its own IDC, it needs to invest heavily in the first phase, plus 50% O&M fee for third-party O&M. Taking the 10-year life cycle as an example, CMG needs to invest at least RMB 200 million. In addition, to realize the DR function, it takes 2 years from project initiation to completion, which is unbearable to the group. After comparing a number of cloud service providers, CMG believes that the customization service capabilities of eSurfing Cloud could meet its "localized" requirements. Why choose eSurfing Cloud? Leaders of CMG summarized the reasons as "six -ables, one saving and one fast". The six "-ables" refer to that CT public cloud is customizable, serviceable, connectable, credible (data and network), reliable, and scalable. Combined with customized private cloud, the hybrid cloud solution for CMG can provide localized services for its branches that does not access user data internally and creates an active-active DR solution externally. So the solution features double-layer security. What do "one saving and one fast" mean? "Saving" refers to cost effectiveness, while "fast" means out-of-the-box.
CMG has adopted the dual-active DR solution "tailor-made" by eSurfing Cloud: There are two centers to share the overall service traffic with minute-level disaster recovery and emergency response capabilities. The time from failure to recovery is less than 5 minutes, so as to ensure the sustainable and stable operation of the comprehensive management and control systems. Meanwhile, for CMG's various needs in terms of communications and cloud, eSurfing Cloud offers a package of cloud-network integration and ICT services for CMG by integrating the cloud platform, dedicated lines, IDC hosting, etc., which truly saves the trouble of enterprises. eSurfing Cloud completed dedicated line opening, system migration, removal of minicomputers, hosting area design, and active-active enabling of applications within four months, thereby saving costs for CMG.
As the industry's first active-active design based on heterogeneous cloud platforms, the IDC of CMG has created the first dual-active DR practice between the private cloud of a large SOE and the public cloud. As a result, CMG marches at the forefront of the industry with technological innovations. In the future, CMG and eSurfing Cloud will jointly explore new models of IDC integration, so that all IDCs of the group's professional subsidiaries can be integrated and interconnected, to realize big data sharing and collaboration across the group.
