Application Scenarios
A backup policy enables automatic backup at specific intervals for the bound EVS resources based on the preset policy task. Periodic backups can be used to restore data quickly in case of EVS damage or data loss, thus ensuring the security of EVS and the stable operation of your business.
Constraints and Restrictions
l When you choose to periodically back up the EVS through automatic backup, make sure that the backup policy is Enabled. Only in this status can the system automatically back up the bound EVS resources, and delete the expired backups periodically based on the policy requirements.
l The backup name automatically generated based on the backup policy is autobk_xxxx.
l By default, each user can create 20 backup policies, and one backup policy can bind 200 EVSs. If you need to adjust the quota, please submit an order.
Procedure
1. Log in to the Console page.
2. Click in the upper left corner of the Console and select Region.
3. Click Storage Console > Volume Backup Service, click Backup Policy, and go to the Volume Backup Service Policy tab.
4. Click the Create Backup Policy button.
5. Set the backup policy information on the Create Backup Policy page. The parameters are described in the following table:
Parameter | Description |
Name | Set the name for the backup policy, which defaults to Policy-four-digit random number. It must contain 2 to 64 characters including Chinese characters, English letters, numbers, underlines, or medium dashes. |
Enable or not | The enabling status of a backup policy, which defaults to be Not Enabled. It is recommended to enable the backup policy here. Only after a backup policy is Enabled will the system automatically back up the EVS resources. |
Backup Time | Set the execution time of the backup task. The time selected here is the hour execution time fined-grained to days. You can select multiple times in a day for backup execution. It is recommended that you perform backups during off-peak hours or when no services are running, such as early in the morning. |
Backup Period | Set the execution period of the backup task. There are two options: Weekly and Daily. l Weekly: Based on weeks, you can specify on which days of each week the backup will be executed. Multiple days can be selected. l Daily: Based on days, you can specify the interval (ranging from 1 to 30 days) at which the backup will be executed. Note: When you select Daily, it means that the backup is executed at an interval of the specified days. For instance, if you set the period to Every 3 Days, it means that the backup is performed on the 1st, 4th, and 7th of each month, and so on. The backup policy takes effect in the month it is created. For example, if you create a backup policy with a backup period of Every 3 Days on the 2nd of a given month, the first backup date is the 4th of that month. Every 3 Days means that the backup is executed on the 1st, 4th, and 7th of each month, and so on. It is recommended that you back up the EVS during off-peak hours or when no services are running. |
Retention Rule | Set the retention rule after backups are generated, that is, which backups will be retained. You can select By Time, By Number, or Save Perpetually. l By Time: You can choose to retain backups for one month, three months, six months, or one year. Alternatively, you can customize a desired period. The value ranges from 1 to 99,999 days. When the specified time is reached, the backup policy is automatically deleted. l By Number: The total number of backups to retain for a single EVS based on the backup policy. The value ranges from 1 to 99,999 days. You can select whether to retain the first backup of the month. l Save Perpetually: After a backup is generated, it will be retained perpetually. However, you can manually delete it. Note: l When the Rule is set to By Number, if the number of retained backups exceeds the preset number, the system automatically deletes the earliest backups based on the time. l When Rule is set to By Time, if the retained backups expire at the preset time, the system automatically deletes all the expired backups. Deleted backups do not affect the data restoration of other backups. l When you edit the backup policy or bind the EVS to a new policy, the retention rule for the new policy applies to the backup policy when it comes to automatic deletion. |
Note: Theoretically, with more frequent backups made, the backups are generated and better protection for EVS data is provided. However, in actual work, you need to select a suitable backup solution considering various factors such as cost, storage space capacity, and service reliability requirements.
6. After the parameter configuration is complete, click OK to complete the creation of the backup policy.
Note: After creating a backup policy, you also need to bind the backup policy to an EVS and bind the backup policy to a repository. After all these are done, the automatic backup function can work. For specific operations, see Binding an EVS to a Backup Policy and Binding a Repository to a Backup Policy.
