Application Scenarios
VBS offers two configuration options: Back up Now and Automatic Backup.
l Back up Now means one-off backup. In this case, the task is manually created by users.
l Automatic Backup means periodic backup. In this case, the task is created by creating a backup policy and binding the EVS.
For the comparison between the two VBS configuration options, see the table below. You can select an appropriate configuration option according to your actual needs.
Comparison Item | Back up Now | Automatic Backup |
Backup policy | Not Required | Required |
Number of backups | Manual one-off backup | Automatic periodic backup based on the backup policy |
Number of EVSs that can be backed up at a time | Multiple | Multiple |
Backup name | Customization supported | Automatically generated by the system |
Backup method | Full backup initially and incremental backup subsequently | Full backup initially and incremental backup subsequently |
Recommended application scenarios | Executed before patching or upgrading the operating system or upgrading an application on a cloud server. This ensures quick restore to the original state in case of patching or upgrading failure. | Executed for routine backup protection of an EVS. The latest backup can be used for restoration in case of unexpected faults or data loss. |
In addition, you can mix these two backup options. For example, associate all EVSs with a backup policy for routine backup protection depending on the importance of data stored in the EVS. The one-off backups should be performed periodically for some EVSs that store extremely important data.
Note: If the backup EVS is encrypted, VBS will automatically inherit the encryption properties to create an encrypted backup copy.
Back up Now (One-off Backup)
Constraints and Restrictions
l At least one repository already exists and the repository status is Available.
l At least one EVS already exists and the EVS status is Attached or Unattached.
Procedure
1. Log in to the Console page.
2. Click in the upper left corner of the Console and select Region.
3. Click to select Storage Console > Volume Backup Service and go to the Volume Backup Service List page.
4. On the Repository tab, select the corresponding repository in the Repository List, and click Create Backup on the right.
5. In the opened Create Backup interface, select the EVS that needs to be backed up, check the disk to be backed up from the Disk List, and click the button to include it in Checked Disks. If no selection is made, you can check the target disk in Checked Disks and click the
button to withdraw it.
6. In the Backup Configuration section, select Back up Now. The system performs a one-off backup for the checked disk. After selecting Back up Now, you need to set the name for the backup. When backing up multiple disks, the system will automatically add suffixes. For example: Backup-0001, Backup-0002. In this case, the default name is used.
7. Click Next to start backing up. Go to the Create Backup confirmation page. After confirming that the information is correct, check I have read and agreed to the relevant agreement Volume Backup Service Agreement and click Confirm Order to successfully create a backup for the EVS.
