What is a backup policy?

A backup policy is a series of preset rules for backing up data, including the backup policy name, schedules of backup tasks, and retention policy for backup data. The schedule includes the frequency and the time point of backup execution, and the retention policy of backup data includes the storage time or storage quantity of backup data. By creating and enabling a backup policy, binding a backup repository for the backup policy, and binding the EVS to be backed up, you can achieve the automatic backup of the EVS.

How do I back up multiple EVS resources at the same time?

1.      On the Console > Storage Console > Volume Backup Service page, create a repository.

2.      When creating the repository, you can select multiple EVS resources and conduct backup configurations. VBS offers two configuration options: Back up Now and Automatic Backup.

¡  Back up Now: That is a one-off backup. In this case, the task is manually created by users. You can back up multiple EVSs at the same time.

¡  Automatic Backup: That is a periodic backup. In this case, the task is created by creating a backup policy and binding the EVS. If the Automatic Backup is performed, the system will automatically back up the EVS based on the backup policy. One backup policy can be bound up to 200 EVSs.

How do I retain backups perpetually?

VBS supports both manual backups and automatic backups.

l  Manual backup: Under normal circumstances, manual backups will not be deleted. You simply need to ensure that you do not delete them manually and that your account balance is sufficient. The system will not automatically release these backups due to insufficient account balance.

l  Automatic backup: It is a periodic backup that automatically generates backups based on a backup policy. When presetting the backup policy, you simply need to set the retention rule to Save Perpetually. Once this setting is completed, your backups will be retained perpetually as long as your account balance is sufficient.

How do I cancel the EVS automatic backup?

You can cancel the EVS automatic backup in two ways:

l  Set the status of the automatic backup policy to be canceled to Disable.

l  Unbind the automatic backup policy to be canceled from the EVS resources and the repository.

How do I automatically delete expired backups?

In VBS, expired backups can be automatically deleted by setting the retention rule in the preset backup policy.

The retention rule is an important configuration item when you create a backup policy. For example, you can set the retention rule to By Time. After that, you can further choose to retain backups for one month, three months, six months, or one year. Alternatively, you can customize a desired period ranging from 1 to 99,999 days. When Rule is set to By Time, if the retained backups expire at the preset time, the system automatically deletes all the expired backups.

Why is the back not deleted based on the retention rule I set?

1.      When the status of the backup policy is set to Disable, the backup will not be automatically deleted according to the retention rules in the policy. To resolve this issue, you need to enable the backup policy.

2.      If you modify the retention rule when the policy is active, there is a possibility that backups will not be automatically deleted. In this case, you need to confirm the retention rule and set it to a status that meets your business needs.

How many policies can an EVS bind?

An EVS can only be bound to one policy at a time and execute one backup policy for backup.

If you want to bind a certain backup policy to an EVS but the EVS is already bound to another policy, you need to unbind the original policy first and rebind the new policy.

What impacts does disabling or modifying a backup policy have on backup?

1. If the status of the backup policy is Disabled, the backup will not go automatically according to the backup period defined in the policy. However, the backup copy will still be automatically deleted according to the retention rule defined in the policy.

2. If the retention rule of the backup policy is modified, the backup copy will be retained according to the new retention rule, and the backup copy not meeting the new retention rule will be deleted. We recommend that you carefully confirm the retention rule and set it according to your business needs.

3. If the backup period of the backup policy is modified, the next automatic backup will go based on the new backup period.
