EVS Backup FAQs

This topic summarizes the common questions during EVS backup.

Can EVS be backed up across regions?

EVS can only be backed up and recovered within a region, rather than across regions.

Backup and restoration within a region can be implemented by VBS. For more information, see EVS Backup and Restoration.

Do you need to stop the elastic cloud server for EVS backup?

No.

Users can determine whether to stop the elastic cloud server for EVS backup as needed.

Theoretically, CT-VBS can work when the elastic cloud server and EVS are running and you do not have to stop the elastic cloud server.

When the cloud server runs normally and the EVS reads and writes data normally, in addition to storage in the EVS, some of the latest data is stored to the memory as cache data. When backing up data, you need to understand that the cached data is not automatically written to the EVS, which may cause backup data inconsistency.

Therefore, we recommend that you stop writing data or stop the application system before backing up data, and back up data when the number of users is small, for example, in the early morning. If there are high integrity requirements on the backup data, you can also directly shut down the cloud server for offline backup.

How long does it take to back up an EVS?

The time the backup will take depends on the disk size and backup type. The higher the disk capacity, the longer the backup duration.

EVS backup includes full backup and incremental backup. The initial backup of an EVS disk is a full backup and subsequent backup operations are all incremental backups. The full backup takes a long time whereas subsequent incremental operations are much shorter.

Can an EVS containing an application system be backed up?

Yes.

For applications that have consistency requirements, such as databases and email systems, we recommend that you stop all data write operations before backing up the data.

If the write operation cannot be stopped, stop the application system or the cloud server for offline backup.

Can EVS data be restored from the backup after scaling up?

Yes.

Only the EVS data before the change is restored from the backup, that is, the data before scaling up. After restoration, data and file system configuration are restored to the state before scaling up. You must scale up the partitions and file system on the expanded capacity. For more information, see Overview of Scaling Up EVS.
