This topic uses Windows Server 2016 Data Center 64-bit Chinese Edition as an example to describe how to plan the expanded capacity of system disks and data disks into the existing or the new partition.

Scenario

Upon completion of scaling up in the console, you must plan the expanded capacity into the existing partition or allocate a new partition to contain the expanded capacity, as follows.

This topic uses Windows Server 2016 Data Center 64-bit Chinese Edition as an example to describe how to plan the expanded capacity of system disks and data disks into the existing partition and the new partition. The operation may differ depending on the operating system. This topic is for reference only.

Note:

Please exercise caution with scaling up. Data loss or error may occur due to misoperation. We recommend that you back up data before scaling up. Volume Backup Service (VBS) is recommended.

Before You Begin

You have logged in to the elastic cloud server. For more information, see Overview of Windows ECS
Login.
The system disks and data disks have been attached to the cloud server and initialised.
The EVS has been scaled up in the console, and attached to the elastic cloud server. For more information, see Overview of Scaling Up EVS.

Operation Steps

If an EVS is scaled up when the cloud server is powered off, the newly added capacity of the Windows-based system disks and data disks may be automatically planned to the ending partition after the cloud server is powered on. In this case, the newly added capacity can be used directly and the following steps are skipped.

Planning the expanded capacity of the system disk into the existing partition

In the lower left corner of the desktop screen of the cloud server, click the Start icon . In the menu list that appears, choose Windows Server and Server Manager . The Server Manager window is displayed.
On the menu bar in the upper right corner, click Tools > Computer Management . The Computer Management page is displayed.
In the left-side navigation pane on the Computer Management page, select Storage > Disk Management to go to the Disk Management page. You can note that Disk 0 where the system disk resides has a 10 GB unallocated capacity.

Note: If you cannot view the expanded capacity, select Disk Management and right-click Refresh .
In the Disk Management window, select the disk to be allocated to a partition. Currently, the disk is allocated to the existing partition. The existing C: drive partition displays the capacity before scaling up. Right-click the selected disk and select Extend Volume from the menu.
In the Extend Volume Wizard window that is displayed, click Next as instructed on the screen.
In the Extend Volume Wizard window that is displayed, in the Select the amount of space in MB (E) field, enter the disk capacity to be scaled up. The default capacity expansion data is retrieved here. Then click Next .
On the Extend Volume Wizard page that appears, click Finish . Return to the Disk Management page. If the capacity of the disk in the existing drive C partition is larger than the capacity before scaling up, the expansion succeeds.

Planning the expanded capacity of the system disk to the new partition

In the lower left corner of the desktop screen of the cloud server, click the Start icon . In the menu list that appears, choose Windows Server and Server Manager . The Server Manager window is displayed.
On the menu bar in the upper right corner, click Tools > Computer Management . The Computer Management page is displayed.
In the left-side navigation pane on the Computer Management page, select Storage > Disk Management . The Disk Management page is displayed. You can note that Disk 0 where the system disk resides has a 10 GB unallocated capacity.

Note: If you cannot view the expanded capacity, select Disk Management and right-click Refresh .
Right-click on the 10 GB unallocated capacity area and click New Simple Volume .
In the New Simple Volume Wizard window, click Next to continue. On the Specify Volume Size page, in the Simple Volume Size (MB) field, enter the capacity of the disk you want to scale up to. The default value is used here. Click Next .
On the Assign Drive Letter or Path page, assign a new drive letter F to the newly added capacity, and click Next .
On the Format Partition page, check Format this volume with the following settings , keep the default settings, and click Next .
In the New Simple Volume Wizard window, click Finish to close the wizard and return to the Disk Management page.
On the Disk Management page, disk 0 has two partitions: existing drive C partition and new drive F partition. If drive F is in good condition, the system disk is successfully planned into the new drive F partition.

Planning the expanded capacity of the data disk into the existing partition

In the lower left corner of the desktop screen of the cloud server, click the Start icon . In the menu list that appears, choose Windows Server and Server Manager. The Server Manager window is displayed.
On the menu bar in the upper right corner, click Tools > Computer Management . The Computer Management page is displayed.
In the left-side navigation pane on the Computer Management page, select Storage > Disk Management to go to the Disk Management page.
Note: If you cannot view the expanded capacity, select Disk Management and right-click Refresh.
On the Disk Management page, disk 1 before the data disk. The data disk contains the partition E and 10 GB of unallocated capacity. You want to allocate the 10 GB capacity to the existing partition of volume E. Right-click the selected disk E and choose Extend Volume .
In the Extend Volume Wizard window that is displayed, click Next.
In the Extend Volume Wizard window that is displayed, in Select the amount of space in MB (E) field, enter the disk capacity to be scaled up. The default expansion capacity is automatically retrieved here. Then click Next .
In the Extend Volume Wizard window, click Finish to return to the Disk Management page. The unallocated 10 GB capacity has been added to Volume E.

Planning the expanded capacity of the data disk to the new partition

In the lower left corner of the desktop screen of the cloud server, click the Start icon . In the menu list that appears, choose Windows Server and Server Manager . The Server Manager window is displayed.
On the menu bar in the upper right corner, click Tools > Computer Management . The Computer Management page is displayed.
In the left-side navigation pane on the Computer Management page, select Storage > Disk Management to go to the Disk Management page.
Note: If you cannot view the expanded capacity, select Disk Management and right-click Refresh .
The in current disk 1 has 10 GB of unallocated capacity. Right-click on the unallocated capacity area and click New Simple Volume .
In the New Simple Volume Wizard window, click Next to continue. On the Specify Volume Size page, in the Simple Volume Size (MB) field, enter the capacity of the disk you want to scale up to. The default value is used here. Click Next .
On the Assign Drive Letter or Path page, assign a new drive G to the newly added capacity, and click Next .
On the Format Partition page, check Format this volume with the following settings , keep the default settings, and click Next .
In the New Simple Volume Wizard window, click Finish to close the wizard and return to the Disk Management page.
On the Disk Management page, disk 1 has two partitions: existing drive E partition and new drive G partition. If drive G is in good condition, the data disk is successfully planned into the new drive G partition.
