Overview of Practices

Logical Volume Manager (LVM) is a mechanism for managing disk partitions in a Linux environment. In essence, it is a virtual device drive and adds a new level of abstraction between block devices and physical devices in the kernel. As a powerful tool, LVM can provide flexible storage management functions and easier disk space management. The following figure shows the architecture of LVM.

In general, LVM is used to manage EVS in the following steps:

• Create physical volumes: Initialize EVS partitions or entire hard disk as physical volumes.

• Create a volume group: Add one or more physical volumes to a logical volume group.

• Create logical volumes: Create logical volumes from a logical volume group.

• Format logical volumes: Format logical volumes using an appropriate file system.

• Mount logical volumes: Mount formatted logical volumes to a specific directory in the file system.
