Overview of Practices

If the capacity of a logical volume cannot meet your needs, you can expand the capacity of the logical volume.

This guide assumes that you have created a 19 GB logical volume but the capacity cannot meet your needs and you want to expand the capacity of an EVS to increase the capacity of the logical volume by 10 GB.

Operation Steps

Step 1: Expand the capacity of EVS in the console.

Log in to the console.
Click in the upper left corner of the console and select a region.
Click Storage > EVS to go the EVS home page.
Locate the EVS for which you want to expand the capacity. For more information on how to expand the capacity of an EVS, see Expanding EVS Capacity.

Step 2: Expand the capacity of a logical volume

Log in to the elastic cloud server as the root user.
Run the fdisk -l command to check whether the system correctly identifies the disk after the capacity is expanded. The information as shown in the following figure is returned:

The capacity of /dev/vdb is 10 GB before expansion and is 20 GB after expansion.
Run the pvdisplay command to check the information of the physical volume in the LVM. The information as shown in the following figure is returned:

The capacity of /dev/vdb is 10 GB, indicating that the capacity of the physical volume is not increased.
Run pvresize -v name of disk to expand the capacity of the physical volume of this EVS. For example, run the pvresize -v /dev/vdb command. The information as shown in the following figure is returned:

This indicates that the capacity of the physical volume of /dev/vdb is expanded.
To expand the capacity of the existing partition, run lvextend -l +100%FREE path of logical volume to expand the capacity of the logical volume.
For example, run the lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/vgdata/lvdata1 command. The information as shown in the following figure is returned:
Run the resize2fs path of logical volume to expand the capacity of the file system of the disk partition. For example, run the resize2fs /dev/vgdata/lvdata1 command. The information as shown in the following figure is returned:
Run the lvdisplay command to view the capacity expansion result. The information as shown in the following figure is returned:

As shown in the figure, the capacity of the logical volume "LV Size" increases by 10 GB.
