Elastic Cloud Server

Expand Cloud Disk

2025-11-24 09:38:15

Scenario

When the EVS space is insufficient, users can expand the capacity of EVS, which is EVS expansion. The EVS capacity can be expanded in the following two ways:

· Apply for a new EVS and mount it to the cloud server.

· Expand the existing EVS space. Both system disks and data disks can be expanded.

This section focuses on the Method 2. In this method, you can expand the EVS with the status of Mounted or Unmounted. The EVS with the status of Mounted means that the EVS that needs to be expanded has been mounted to the cloud server. The EVS with the status of Unmounted means that the EVS that needs to be expanded currently is not mounted to any cloud server. The maximum capacity supported by the system disk is 2 TB, the maximum capacity supported by the data disk is 32 TB, the minimum expansion capacity is 1 GB, and the expansion step is 1 GB.

Restriction and Limitations

· If the expansion is for the EVS with the status of Mounted, then the cloud server mounted on the EVS must be in the Running or Shutdown to support expansion.

· The EVS expansion feature supports expanding the EVS capacity, but does not support reducing the EVS capacity.

· When the disk is already in use, make sure to check the partition format of the disk before expanding the capacity as follows:

Partition Formats

Cautions

MBR partition

The maximum capacity is 2 TB (2,048 GB), and the part exceeding 2 TB cannot be used.

GPT partition

The maximum capacity is 18EB (19,327,352,832 GB). The maximum data disk capacity supported by EVS is 32 TB (32,768 GB), which means you can expand the data disk to a maximum of 32 TB.

MBR partition needs to be expanded to more than 2 TB

The disk partition format must be switched from MBR to GPT. During this process, services will be interrupted and the original data on the disk will be erased when the disk partition is changed. So please back up the data before expansion.

Procedure

The following describes how to implement expansion on the console:

1. Log in to the console.

2. Click  in the upper left corner of the control center to select a region, here we select East China 1.

3. Click Storage > EVS to go to the EVS homepage.

4. In the EVS list, select Expand under the Action column in the row where the specified EVS is located to enter the Expand Disk page.

5. Set the New Capacity parameter as prompted, and click OK.

6. After successful payment, you can view the result of EVS expansion on the EVS homepage. When the status of the EVS changes from Expanding to Unmounted or Mounted, you can see that the capacity has been increased, indicating that the expansion is successful.

7. After the expansion is successful, subsequent processing of the expanded EVS is required. The processing methods of cloud servers vary for different operating systems, for detail, see EVS - Expand EVS.
